Gmail’s Big Upgrade: Smarter Inbox With Gemini AI
Gmail is used by nearly 3 billion people today, and over the years Google has added features like Smart Reply and strong spam protection. But the way we use email has changed a lot since 2004 — inboxes are busier, threads are longer, and finding information often feels like searching for a needle in a haystack.
To make email easier to manage, Google is bringing Gmail into the Gemini era.

AI Overviews: Answers Without the Search
Instead of scrolling through long email chains or digging through old messages, Gmail can now create quick summaries of conversations. When you open a thread with dozens of replies, it highlights the main points automatically.
You can also ask your inbox questions in plain language, like:
“Who was the plumber who sent me a bathroom renovation quote last year?”
Gemini looks through your emails and gives you the answer directly — no keyword searching, no manual scanning.
Feature Availability
Gmail’s new AI-powered features are rolling out in stages. The conversation summaries created by AI Overviews are available to all users at no cost, so anyone can benefit from quick highlights of long email threads. The more advanced option — asking your inbox questions and getting direct answers powered by Gemini — is reserved for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. This tiered availability ensures everyone gets useful improvements while still offering deeper capabilities for users who want a fully AI-driven inbox experience.
